Summer is just around the corner, and with rising temperatures comes the season for cloudbursts.
A cloudburst is intense rainfall that falls over a short period, overwhelming drains and terrain. The phenomenon occurs when warm, humid air rises, cools, and condenses. If the clouds become dense enough, they can release large amounts of rain very quickly.
How to prepare
Before heavy rainfall occurs, it is useful to know how you can protect your property.
Generally, it is always a good idea to have your property assessed in terms of possible climate adaptation solutions.
This may include the installation of backflow preventers and adjustments to the terrain to prevent water from easily flowing into the basement. It may also involve larger projects, such as establishing a system for local drainage of rainwater — also known as an LAR solution (illustrated in the image) — which limits or delays rainwater from entering the sewer system and thereby reduces pressure on already strained drainage infrastructure.
These adaptations need to be carried out well in advance, as they require planning and design.
Fortunately, there are also other, quicker measures you can take when a cloudburst is forecast, helping to limit potential damage.
Useful precautions before a cloudburst
- Pay attention to the property’s basement. Encourage residents to place items on shelves or raise them at least 40 cm above the floor. This helps protect belongings from contaminated sewer water. Removing items from the basement entirely is naturally the best solution.
- Check that windows and doors are closed. Basement windows, especially those in window wells, should remain shut, but remember skylights as well.
- Ensure that drains in window wells and surface drains are cleared of leaves and debris so they can handle rainwater effectively.
- Make sure the sewer system is properly maintained so water can flow freely.
- Have an emergency response plan ready. Sandbags, pumps, and manual effort are always good to have on hand. There are also various solutions available for quickly sealing basement doors and similar openings.
If damage occurs
If damage occursand a cloudburst causes water damage in the basement, it is important to take precautions, for example, wearing gloves, as the water may be contaminated with sewage.
